Donald J. Trump and Kamala Harris are starkly different presidential candidates. So why are so many voters — roughly 1 in 6 — still unsure of their choice?

As the 2024 US Presidential Election draws closer, campaigns for both Harris and Trump have shifted their focus onto undecided voters. With only 31 days left before Americans cast their ballots, we asked voters to name their biggest worries about the candidates.
Here is what they said:
N. Haley – SC.
CONCERN ABOUT TRUMP
“I think he will be the end of democracy, at least the one the rest of you live in.”
CONCERN ABOUT HARRIS
“Being president is hard for ladies like me and Kamala. She is very emotional and flip floppy on the issues. I could maybe support her if she agreed to invoke the 25th amendment for a week each month, but that just seems too messy.”
Megyn Kelly – IL
CONCERN ABOUT TRUMP
“I wouldn’t trust him in a room with my daughter, or his daughter to be honest. But I can see that being an advantage. We need a strong president who won’t take no for an answer from other world leaders or even the American people. And I think his relationship to Ivanka shows real critical thinking skills, he even asked, ‘Is it wrong to be more sexually attracted to your own daughter than your wife?’ He’s asking the right questions.”
CONCERN ABOUT HARRIS
“I wouldn’t trust her in a room with my daughter; she might get bright ideas about what women can do. I’m all for woman teachers, nurses, and even secretaries but I’m just not sold on a woman president.”
T. Cruz – TX
CONCERN ABOUT TRUMP
“He’s a criminal and a fraud and a liar and a sniveling coward.”
CONCERN ABOUT HARRIS
“She’s doesn’t understand me like he does.”
J. Vance – OH
CONCERN ABOUT TRUMP
“He’s unfit for office—too old, too extreme, too unhinged. He’s an existential threat to our country and could turn it into 1936 Germany.”
CONCERN ABOUT HARRIS
“She doesn’t have kids (real ones). I don’t know enough about her policies. The worst is that she refused my offer to be her Vice President. A Harris presidency could turn our nation into 2016 Germany.”
J. Manchin, WV
CONCERN ABOUT TRUMP
“He taunts powerful world leaders and doesn’t seem to have any restraint. My taxes went up, too, and the way he managed the Coronavirus was a disaster.”
CONCERN ABOUT HARRIS
“West Virginia isn’t ready for a Black/Woman Democrat. We never got past the 2008 primaries.”
In interviews and polls, the most prominent concerns undecided voters have with Donald Trump surround his influence on and potential destruction of democracy, felony indictments, and outright bigotry. More voters were unsure of Kamala Harris as a candidate, often for no distinguishable reason, but more of a general aversion and gut reaction.
Words used to describe Harris often included:
- “Something’s off.”
- “It just doesn’t feel right.”
- “I don’t know why but…”
- “I just don’t like her.”
PERCEPTIONS OF TRUMP
72% of undecided voters worry Donald Trump is an entertainer and performer, not a president. However, 80% love his stage presence and word-juggling routine.
39% of undecided voters believe Donald Trump would be good to sit next to on a plane, however, they believe he would talk about 9/11 conspiracy theories for half of the flight.
50% of undecided voters support Donald Trump’s passion for law enforcement. The same voters also support Donald Trump’s rebellious, anti-authority actions.
62% of undecided voters believe Donald Trump’s business prowess makes him qualified for the job of president. 100% of them have watched The Apprentice. 0% of them can read.
88% of undecided voters believe Donald Trump looks like a shoe made from Lorax leather. 50% of these voters do not believe in climate change or deforestation.
207% of anti-choice undecided voters would let Donald Trump give their ‘girl cousin’ an abortion.
32% of undecided voters believe Donald Trump is a threat to democracy. 10% said they would prefer to keep their guns than the freedom of speech, the freedom of worship, the freedom from want, and the freedom from fear.
PERCEPTIONS OF HARRIS[1]
79% of undecided voters believe Kamala Harris is less likely to have a soul or heartbeat than an egg.
38% of undecided voters worry about Kamala Harris being too hormonal. 88% of those voters take testosterone supplements.
30% of self-identifying undecided progressive men think Harris is not as antiracist and feminist as they are, unprompted mention their height and income.
66.66% of undecided voters think Kamala Harris would be prettier, better President if she smiled more.
50% of undecided voters think Kamala Harris would be better fit for office if she had genetic spawn. The other 50% of undecided voters think she is already distracted by being a stepmother of two.
98% of undecided voters think Kamala Harris, under the Biden Administration, has failed “economy and job” [sic]. They proceeded to angrily tear our copies of the jobs report, basic data and told us “We don’t know anything, the Biden crime ring has ruined this country” in unison.
201% of undecided voters claim they have personally seen Kamala Harris giving school children poppers.
Everyone in one focus group chanted “get a hysterectomy” until we “promised.”
INCONCLUSIVE DATA
Minus 18% (-18%) of undecided voters were comfortable with tampons being in the situation room. 49% of these voters believe tampons can be used for Russian spying.
We are unsure how this was possible, but could find no issues in our data collection or reason to believe it is inaccurate.
[1] This footnote is breaking the format because one of my friends had a suggestion for this section and I really liked it: “400% of swing state voters blame Kamala Harris for their wife’s abortion.”
